Principal Research Scientist – Program Director

Cogito is a 4-year-old software company developing a fundamentally new way of analyzing and understanding human communication and perception. We use advanced signal processing and computational engineering to draw out social signals exchanged in conversation. These signals describe distress, intent, and attitude and allow our enterprise clients to dramatically improve the value of their customer interactions. Our company has recently been contracted for an expansive research program in our core technological areas, allowing us to expand our team. Cogito currently seeks a brilliant Research Scientist with world-class experience in experimental studies and machine learning to join our research and development team.

The ideal candidate enjoys and has a natural affinity for organizing and executing large-scale projects with multiple collaborators, has broad experience and interest in experimental studies and statistical machine learning, and is eager to work in a highly talented team to solve meaningful real-world problems in health care and other industries.

Role:

  • Act as ‘principal investigator’ on one or more funded research programs, including serving as primary point of contact for funding agencies, university partners, and commercial partners.
  • Design and execute research studies, including getting IRB and regulatory approvals, recruiting subjects, and managing project schedules.
  • Contribute to ongoing research and development infrastructure, including developing and improving algorithms, methodologies, and software for learning and evolving data-driven models.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead experimental studies, including designing experimental protocols, recruiting subjects, developing experimental tools and software, making new discoveries, analyzing results, and communicating results.
  • Interact and coordinate with affiliates in funding agencies, partner companies, and partner academic institutions to achieve various program goals.
  • Interact and collaborate with team members in engineering, research, and operations to achieve company technology goals.
  • Contribute to development of core machine learning technology.
  • Contribute to development of intellectual property, including writing patents.
  • Report and present research results to clients and community.
  • Keep abreast of and understand state-of-the-art technology and published research in machine learning, statistical analysis, audio/speech analysis, and social signal processing.

Qualifications:

  • Doctoral or equivalent degree in engineering, computer science, psychology, cognitive science or other relevant field.
  • Substantial research experience involving randomized subject trials and statistical analysis of results.
  • Strong entrepreneurial spirit. Desire to affect positive change in the world by applying experience in a practical setting with real-world data and outcomes.
  • Desire to work in a focused highly talented team environment.
  • Desire and ability to assume leadership role in producing research and development results on a program schedule.

  • Conducting research and applying the scientific method.

  • Broad machine learning skills. Generative and discriminative, supervised and unsupervised, validation techniques.
  • Fluency with common modeling tools. Matlab/Octave/RStatistics.
  • Effective programming. Python/Perl, C/C++.

  • Superior attention to detail.
  • Ability and willingness to learn new tools.
